Paul Henderson, the former Olympic sailor who has managed Toronto's failed Olympic bid and the bid for the PanAms, has warned Premier McGuinty that costs for the games are skyrocketing and need to be reined in.
“The magnitude of the total taxpayers’ exposure should wake up those involved to the fact that major TO2015 restructuring must be done,” he wrote to the premier.
Henderson says the games are already $1.6-billion over budget. The original cost was pegged at $1.4-billion The letter was made public by Sun columnist Joe Warmington, who says "That’s a lot of cash for a two-week party few care about."
Henderson, 77, suggested a number of savings, including running the PanAms concurrently with the PanPara games.
The chairman of the PanAm games committee is former Ontario Premier David Peterson.
